DIY in the garage, how to organize yourself

In September we always start full of good intentions and desire to start new activities. If in your case the activity in question is DIY in the garage, the first thing to do is to organize the spaces as best as possible to create a space of your own to work comfortably.

Whether it is carpentry, home decoration, object making or taking care of your means of transportation, the activities that can be carried out in the garage are useful and fun, but they require adequate space. Not only the equipment could be bulky, but this kind of activity is generally messy.

That's why the garage is always the preferred place for DIY, if it weren't for the fact that most of us find ourselves struggling daily with the disorder of this area of the house, where we store all the objects we don't know where to put and we regularly park there.

The first thing to do if we want to devote ourselves to DIY, therefore, is to tidy up and clean the garage, subsequently setting up our workstation.

How to arrange the garage

The first step is to take some time to completely empty the garage. It's best to choose a nice day so you can put things in the yard, if you have one. Otherwise, if the garage is in a common space, choose a day when you're sure there will be little traffic from neighbors.

The second thing to do is to sort through the contents of the garage, eliminating all the unnecessary items collected over time. You can decide to catalog them and sell them online on some second-hand portal, or load everything into the car and take it to the nearest recycling center. Remember to check the opening hours to avoid finding yourself with a mountain of stuff that you don't know where to put until the next day!

At this point, it is time to do a thorough cleaning and then set up the new spaces by organizing them into thematic areas.

Metal shelving will be useful for larger items, convenient because you can adjust the assembly to the type of material to be stored and because they are easy to assemble and transport.

Choose instead of closed cabinets for all those objects that need to be stored away from dust and humidity.

In this phase you have to carve out space for your hobby: for example, you could organize a nice work table against the wall with a panel equipped for the tools you use regularly, add a spacious drawer unit with wheels and maybe a chair. If woodworking jobs require more space, you will have to plan to position your workstation in the center of the room. When space is limited, you can opt for a folding table to pull out only when needed, but not if you are looking for something very sturdy and resistant.

Don't forget about lighting, which is very important in a closed space like a garage. Don't just put a chandelier in the center, but also bring light sources near your work area. This way, you can work comfortably even in the evening or on gray winter afternoons.

Another thing that you may need is a source of heat, since garages are generally not heated. It is true that you can wear warm work clothes and that you will always be moving, but a portable space heater for the moments when you are standing still and creating could really make a difference.

An aspect not to be underestimated, finally, if you do not want the work done at the beginning to be nullified after the first day of work, is to set up a system to keep the garage clean. DIY activities, in fact, produce a lot of dirt. And we're not talking about dust: wood shavings and sawdust in the case of carpentry, oil and grease in the case of mechanics, wires and small fabric fragments in the case of tailoring, small scraps of paper or fragments of various materials in all that concerns decoration or objets d'art. In short, these are rather large and heavy residues that cannot be removed with a normal vacuum cleaner.

For this reason it will be useful to equip yourself with a powerful vacuum cleaner bin capable of suctioning all these residues.Ideally, it should be a portable bin, without a bag and equipped with wheels and a long cable to easily move it. Additionally, you should prefer a Wet & Dry bin, able to suction both solids and liquids, so you can also use it on wet or damp floors. This way you can also suction solvents, paint or fuel together with solid residues, and afterwards it will be much easier to complete the cleaning operations by washing with a specific detergent.

Il Vacuum cleaner sucks up solids and liquids Girmi is just the right household appliance to keep close at hand when you dedicate yourself to DIY projects. And now, have fun!
